Transom, Transom on the Wall.....

I have a confession.  I wish my home had more of the "old" and less of the "new".  Since viewing Layla's "handsome transom"at the Lettered Cottage, I have been brainstorming ideas on how to get some old house appeal into our newer one.  Okay, so maybe it's not the true definition of a transom.  No natural light.  No cutting out the wall.  No caulking and painting.  No demolition took place in the installation of this window.  So, I guess there are some positives.:)

I purchased this window at a yard sale over 7 years ago.  Ain't she pretty?  At the time I thought it would look great hanging from the pergola.....problem was (is) that there was (is) no pergola.  So, it made it's way into the attic.  Since then, Dave has found his inner craftsman and can do amazing things with free wood.  He made the frame over a weekend and I knew it would be the perfect addition to the laundry room.  We brought it in and soon realized that it was not going to fit in the space.  Luckily, I found something that did.

Dave, always quick on his feet, suggested using it over the doorway to the office.  I had a salvaged piece of gate hanging there that I was attached to, so I wasn't crazy about the idea....until he brought it in and held it over the doorway.

Dave had to hold it up for the "before" photo....I am still not in the habit of taking those!

Doesn't it look right at home?  It fills the space perfectly and adds some great architectural detail to the room.
The only problem is....you miss the great detail of the window itself because of the red wall behind it.

The concensus around here is that I should paint the wall, an insert, the glass itself, something to highlight the detail.  Any ideas?  Suggestions?  Tips?  Have you done something like this before?

Cut out a hole in the wall and make it permanent. Then the light will shine through!

What a pretty window! If you didn't want to cut the wall out, you could just paint the rectangle behind it a different, lighter color. That way the pretty work in the pane would show up!

Very pretty! Did you find somewhere else to put your piece of gate? Before doing anything permanent, I would experiment with a few things and see if you can't attach them to the back of the window with tape first. Try wallpaper, scrapbook paper, paint a piece of something that is light that could easily be attached and removed from the back of the window. This way if you don't like it you don't have to be disappointed and you could change it out as you feel.

It looks awesome! Thanks for sharing the Lettered Cottage post. I wish my husband was 30 years younger. He was so full of energy and ideas like that.

I think with the piece you have selected and its actual size, it seems to work better hung. The colors of the walls are gorgeous.

tooznie: I wish I could! You would think with all of the vaulted ceilings there would be room, but, alas, the office on the other side has very low ceilings and not enough room:(
This will have to do!

Thanks for all of the ideas, ladies!

It's awesome and really adds something! I say if you don't want to cut into your wall, do crown around it!

I love it over the doorway....as far as highlighting it, I like the suggestions you've been given so far. I also really like burlap :o) You'd get texture too!
peace.

It is perfect. I agree, try something less permanent first.

I love it! I wouldn't paint the glass, but I would try putting fabric or scrapbook paper behind it in a lighter color.

How about painting a piece of poster board and lightly taping it on the backside. That way if you don't like it, removing is a breeze. And, it's cheap enough, to boot!

I agree, put something like white poster board behind it to see how it looks. Who knows, it might look great and you won't have to paint!

Looks good! How about a mirror behind the glass?
Until just a few days ago, I had a window hung like this over a nondescript doorway. There was no framing around the opening between rooms so it was boring and wimpy looking. A long, narrow window the same width as the doorway and with 4 panes gave the look of a transom for many years. This weekend though(finally!) my husband started the process of framing out the doorway so the "transom" came down. I kind of miss it but the doorway looks SO MUCH better.

Ha, love the comment about cutting a hole in the wall. Yes, that is what I think you should do as well...or paint the wall a lighter color so the detail can show through better.

Hanging it was a great idea! Janell

I would say to try a string of lights... http://www.littlebrightlights.com/site/1435548/page/777017

or a mirror.

Thanks for the great ideas! I think I am going to try the poster board first, but the mirror idea has my wheels a spinnin'!!
How do I get one that size? Is there an easy way I don't know about? Just have a glass-cutter size it for me.....we'll see!

Had my comment ready....scrolled ALMOST to the end of the comments before seeing it, it's there, but am adding mine anyway. I was going to say MIRROR definitely. It would give the illusion of an open space. You can either cut a cheap discount store full length mirror if that works for you dimension wise, or take your piece in and have a glass cutter cut one to fit. Am amazed at how great it fits that space! Cool!
